Violence Sells

As I sat to watch some television this evening, I could not help but wonder what's wrong with the world. The very first program I watched was a documentary regarding Guatemala and the atrocities that are being committed against women there. It also featured an interview with the then President of that country and his excuses were ridiculous. He left the interview in a huff once he ran out of any more.

This led me to another channel which features crime and murder investigations, and it was about a murder case in LA. A reformed criminal gets shot by a random bullet when he was performing some community service for a church. Investigations lead to a suspect who had shot that bullet while evading some carjackers.

The next program was an episode regarding the life of lawyers. Here, a police officer behaves in a negligent manner to settle a score with a lawyer, and in the process, ends up killing an innocent victim.

What a way to spend my evening ! Its no secret that the world these days is full of incidents such as these. But are we helping by making programs that depict the same ? And all this for television ratings and increasing viewership. Is it not enough that we see all this in real life during the day, only to come back at night and watch it on the screen ?

Yes, I know I can control what I watch, but is it not our collective responsibility to make this world better than what it is right now ? Will we lead a better life looking at all the negatives rather than focusing on the positives ? Is this what we want our children to watch while they grow up ?

How about the censor board acting on negativity in addition to obscenity ?
